The March/April 2007 issue of School Leader, a publication of the New Jersey School Boards Association, contains a feature article entitled "Cause and Effect," which discusses New Jersey's property tax problems in relation to its failure to properly fund its schools. The article prominently features IELP's Estimated Financial Impact of the "Freeze" of State Aid on New Jersey School Districts, 2002-03 to 2005-06, by Ernest Reock. Read the article.

IELP Executive Director Brenda Liss was quoted in an article in the New Jersey Herald News on Friday, Feb. 23, 2007. The article discussed Governor Corzine's budget address, in particular the increase in school aid that suburban school districts could see as a result of it. Read the article.

IELP Executive Director Brenda Liss was quoted in an article in the New York Sun on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007. The article discussed Newark mayor Cory Booker's desire to pursue control of the Newark school district, which is currently operated by the State of New Jersey. Read the article.

An op-ed piece by Paul Tractenberg appeared in the Newark Star-Ledger on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007. The article discusses the recent audits that took place in Camden, Jersey City, Newark and Paterson, and cautions that these audits not be used to indict the districts and the court rulings that support them. A letter to the editor from Paul Tractenberg appeared in the New Jersey Law Journal on Monday, Jan. 29, 2007. The letter applauds the paper for its recent editorial on diversity in the public schools, but encourages it to go further still. Read the letter. Paul Tractenberg was quoted in the Newark Star-Ledger on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007. The article discussed a hearing on school funding that took place that day before the Assembly Education Committee, at which Tractenberg testified. Read the article.

On Friday, Jan. 19 and Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, IELP was mentioned in a number of articles on school funding that discussed the recent report by Dr. Ernest Reock, Estimated Financial Impact of the "Freeze" of State Aid on New Jersey School Districts, 2002-03 to 2005-06. Among the articles were one by AP writer Tom Hester, and similar articles which appeared in the Newark Star-Ledger, the Trenton Times and the Asbury Park Press. The article also generated a posting on the Blue Jersey Weblog.

An Op-Ed piece by IELP Executive Director Brenda Liss appeared in The Record (Northern New Jersey) on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2006. The article, entitled "Integration Could Get Harder" discusses the desegregation cases currently before the U.S. Supreme Court, and possible ramifications for the state of New Jersey based on the ruling the Court hands down. On Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, IELP Founding Director Paul Tractenberg was a guest on Wisconsin Public Radio's Kathleen Dunn show, on the subject of the desegregation cases that are presently before the U.S. Supreme Court. Listen to the interview.

IELP Associate Director Alan Sadovnik had a letter to the editor appear in the New York Times on Friday, Nov. 24, 2006. The letter, entitled "A Racial Gap, or an Income Gap?" was in response to a New York Times article on closing the achievement gap. Sadovnik asserts that the article pays "insufficient attention to the significant role of socioeconomic inequalities in explaining [achievement] gaps." Read the letter.

Paul Tractenberg was quoted in a column by Bob Braun in the Star-Ledger. The article discussed the ongoing debate on school funding in New Jersey, and appeared on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006. Read the article.

Paul Tractenberg was quoted in an article on Abbott Districts in the New York Times. The article appeared on Monday, Oct. 30, 2006 on the front page of the Metro Section. Read the article.

Paul Tractenberg wrote a letter to the editor of the New Jersey Law Journal which took umbrage at some recent editorials on the subject of Abbott v. Burke. The letter appeared on Oct. 16, 2006. A review of the new book by Prof. Jamie Lew, Asian Americans in Class: Charting the Achievement Gap Among Korean-American Youth (Teachers College Press, 2006) appeared in TCRecord on July 5, 2006. Prof. Lew is on the Urban Education faculty at Rutgers-Newark, and a cooperating faculty member of IELP. Read the review.

Paul Tractenberg wrote a letter to the editor of the Wall Street Journal, which appeared on Monday, May 1. The letter took issue with claims that Ross Sandler and David Schoenbrod made in a recent editorial regarding the courts and school funding. Read the letter.

On April 23, an article co-authored by IELP Associate Director Alan Sadovnik and Jean Anyon of the City University of New York appeared on the Op-Ed page of the New Jersey Section of the New York Times. The article, entitled "Beyond Newark's School Yard," discussed the relationship between the Newark schools and the city government, and offered suggestions on how the new mayor of Newark can improve the relationship. On April 17, Paul Tractenberg was quoted in a New York Times article on the Newark mayoral race and the issue of vouchers. Read the article.

On April 8, Paul Tractenberg was quoted in a New York Times article on Governor Corzine's request to freeze financing of the 31 Abbott Districts. Read an abstract of the article.

In response to a report on 20/20 entitled "Stupid in America" that ran on Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, IELP Associate Director Alan Sadovnik and Professor Susan Semel of Teachers College wrote a letter outlining inconsistencies within the report. Read the letter.
